CREATING ARTISTIC PORTRAITURE FOR THE MINNEAPOLIS, MN AND GREATER TWIN CITY AREA

Let’s Talk Style! What to Wear for Senior Pictures

Once you’ve made the decision to invest in a senior portrait session, you may find yourself with many follow-up questions. What do I wear? Should I bring props? Who should I bring to my session? As your photographer, I am more than happy to walk my clients through the process and give them advice. Stepping in front of the camera with a stranger is a vulnerable act, so I want to make everyone feel as safe and confident as possible!

The Importance of Preparation

The first step to feeling confident and comfortable in front of the camera is feeling prepared. In order to make the day of shooting stress-free, having a solid plan is key. I like to do a call before every senior session to understand your goals, define your aesthetic, and get to know you a bit better. If a call isn’t your vibe, I’m happy to correspond over email or text as well. You can even message me on Instagram or Facebook with any questions. Gotta love Gen Z! It’s helpful to come into your complimentary styling consultation with some inspiration pictures, often from Pinterest or other social media platforms. Other ways to prepare can include self-care and beauty treatments, ranging from getting a haircut or manicure to taking a relaxing bath the night before.

Embrace Your Personal Style

When it comes to choosing outfits, the key is embracing your personal style and feeling comfortable in what you choose. If you want to look back fondly on these as an adult, make sure you are being authentic to who you are at this time in your life. I recommend getting a new piece of clothing or accessory for the session if you can. It gives you something extra to look forward to and feel cute wearing. But if you do, make sure it fits and has all tags removed by the time you arrive. If you are using clothes you already have and love, make sure there are no visible stains or scuff marks on your shoes. These things are easy to fix in person but difficult to retouch in photos!

Top 5 Reasons to Book a Fall Mini Session

If you’re considering booking a fall mini session but aren’t quite sure, let me give you five compelling reasons why it’s a fantastic idea. These sessions aren’t just for families with young kids—they’re for everyone and every occasion!

Fall Mini Sessions – Minneapolis Family Photographer

Ahhhh…FALL! It’s just around the corner, and I feel like time continues to fly! Who doesn’t love the season where the leaves are beautiful, the soup is delightfully warm, and the sweaters feel extra cozy? One of my absolute favorite things about fall is the opportunity to photograph so many wonderful families during my mini sessions.

A Day of Joy and Giving: Levi’s Birthday Bash Fundraiser for Children’s Minnesota

Last summer, I had the honor of capturing an extraordinary fundraising event for the Franklin family. Their youngest son, Levi, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at just 21 months old. But, as of last year, Levi is officially cancer-free! This celebration marked his 4th birthday and raised funds for the Cancer Kids Fund at Children’s Minnesota, making it a day filled with joy, gratitude, and community spirit.

Elevate Your Creative Portfolio with Custom Headshots: A Session with Kenya

At our studio, we specialize in capturing the essence of artists, whether you’re a model, actor, musician, or any other creative professional. We had the pleasure of working with Kenya, a stunning and vibrant model, to update her comp card.

Capturing the Perfect Senior Portrait: Tips for Minnesota Seniors

I know you may be nervous; photography is an exchange that requires a lot of trust and vulnerability. Even after 20 years in the business, I don’t like having my photo taken! Moving from taking selfies on your phone to having a stranger photograph you can feel like giving up creative control. But senior portraits are all about YOU! They should document exactly who you are and what you love.

Consider Your Location and Backdrops

Take your location and backdrops into consideration. Many photographers advise against bright colors, busy patterns, and funky textures. However, I think bold pieces shine against the seamless backdrops in my studio. They allow for people to shine without distractions, like in fashion and editorial photography. I have many color options so we can coordinate those with potential outfits. Whether you’re into rainbows or neutrals, you’re welcome at our studio. If you’re having an outdoor shoot, I suggest visiting the place we will be shooting beforehand and think of what outfits make sense in the space. Or, again, reference your vision board for the session. Also, consider the weather because feeling overheated and uncomfortable will come across in the photos.

MY MOST POPULAR LOCATIONS:

New Plymouth Location!

Our new Plymouth location offers a serene and beautiful setting with private lake access, gardens, outdoor trails, a bridge, and train tracks. This location is perfect for seniors who want to be surrounded by nature. The variety of scenic spots ensures we can capture your senior in a setting that complements their personality and style.

My Minneapolis Studio

Our studio, located in the vibrant NE Minneapolis Arts District, offers a versatile and creative environment for senior portraits. The studio’s artistic ambiance, with its natural light and eclectic decor, provides a perfect backdrop for capturing unique and expressive images.

Nicollet Island

For seniors who love an urban yet natural setting, Nicollet Island is an ideal location. The island’s historic buildings, lush greenery, and picturesque views of the Mississippi River create a diverse array of backdrops. This location is perfect for seniors who want a blend of city and nature in their portraits.

Layer Up for Versatility

I often advise layers as well. This allows for multiple looks without having to bring a change of clothes. Especially if you have a letterman jacket or a punk vest with custom patches, wearing sentimental pieces reflects your personality in portraits. For example, Nora added a layering piece to her outfit, creating a unique look with just one outfit change.

Don’t Forget “Grandma Photos”

When choosing outfits, consider bringing an option for what I call “grandma photos.” This means a polished, buttoned-up look that your grandma would love to see pictures of you in. This makes ordering holiday gifts easy, as you can order a variety of albums, prints, and wall art when you receive your gallery on Pictime.

Gender Affirming Retouching for LGBTQ+ Seniors

Gender affirming retouching is also an option for LGBTQ+ seniors. Malone Portraits is a safe space for queer people and offers custom retouching services. This can range from removing a five-o’clock shadow to smoothing the look of binders under people’s shirts. I have seen how this practice empowers people and how their faces light up when they see who they truly are reflected in photos for the first time. Whether your senior is LGBTQ+, nonbinary, or neurodiverse, capturing their unique spirit through creative portrait photography can create memories that will last a lifetime.

Should I Bring My Prom Dress or Cap and Gown?

Adding a touch of formal elegance to your senior portrait session can make for some truly stunning and memorable photos. Consider bringing your prom dress or graduation gown for a few shots. These outfits hold significant sentimental value and can capture the essence of your high school experience. Whether it’s the dress you danced the night away in or the gown you’ll wear as you walk across the stage, these garments symbolize important milestones. If you love the idea of combining these milestones, consider inquiring about our prom and senior photos package. Reach out for more details and we can create a collection of images that celebrate all the highlights of your senior year.

Think About What to Order

When I return a gallery to a client, there is always an option to order prints, wall art, or albums for their memories. As I always say, what good are pictures if they just live on a screen? Especially if the senior is moving out, having physical photos of them around the house allows parents to look up and revel in the amazing person their child has become, knowing that they have prepared them to take on the world. For my clients, I print their photos personally and have hand-picked vendors for albums to ensure the highest quality.
